Sleep Disorders, Do you have one?

 

For an accurate evaluation, sleep disorders must be evaluated in a qualified, or certified, Sleep Laboratory. This page will provide some clues as to whether you should make an appointment with a Sleep Lab physician.

If you answer yes to one or more question in a section, it is likely to be worth your while to check with your physician for a referral to a sleep Lab.

 

 

Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder

These first two questions are to start to figure out if there is a Sleep Phase disorder. That is where your biological clock is out of synch with normal daylight and dark rhythms. These questions are also associated with other sleep problems which are addressed elsewhere.

 

67) Do you have a problem staying asleep?

3) Do you wake up too early in the morning?

1) No
2) Yes

68) How long does it take you to get to sleep after you’ve gone to bed?

1) Less than 5 minutes
2) Between 5 to 10 minutes
3) Between 10 to 20 minutes
4) Between 20 minutes to an hour
5) More than an hour

 

Any Sleep Disorder can have these symptoms

 

149) Do you experience muscle aches and pain, lightheadedness, nausea, heartburn, muscle tension?

20) Are you noticing changes in your mood or behaviors?

147) Do you wake feeling unrefreshed after a normal amount of sleep?

This particular question is important because often people with Sleep Disorders won't be aware they aren't sleep well, but will feel unrefreshed and fall asleep easily during the day.

 

Narcolepsy

 

121) Do you wake and find that you can’t move at first?

122) Do you ever become weak in the knees or even collapse completely, especially when you are excited?

123) Do you ever have dream-like experiences as you are falling asleep that you believe are real?

125) Have you fallen asleep while doing routine tasks and when waking found that you hadn’t stopped doing that task while asleep?

146) Do you have sleep attacks in which you fall asleep uncontrollably?

Periodic Limb Movement and Restless Legs Disorder

 

137) Have you noticed crawling or aching feelings in the legs (calves) and an inability to keep your legs still?

138) Have you (or your partner) noticed leg twitches or jerks during the night and/or waking up with cramps in your legs?

Sleep Apnea

144) Has your sleeping partner complained about your snoring and says it sounds like you stop breathing and then start snoring with an almost choking sound?
