Selecting a Counselor

Counseling of some kind can be helpful. If you’ve never had it before here are some tips on selecting a good counselor.

  • Ask your doctors, friends and family if they know of anyone they like.
  • Try to get at least three or four names and call each one up and interview him or her. The particular credential is less important than the person’s experience and how that person feels to you.
  • Ask the therapist what kinds of counseling s/he does. You may not understand the details of the answers, unless you’ve studied therapy, but after you interview a couple you’ll get some sense of what seems interesting to you.
  • Then ask your guts - does this person seem to be someone that you think is basically trustworthy and that you might even like? Then ok, go for a few more sessions. If not, then don’t go back, and try another.
