Sleep Deprivation Assessment

 

In sleep studies researchers have found that there is a progression of visual symptoms that indicate increasingly severe sleep deprivation. As you go down this list note your answers.

Please be aware there are other causes besides sleep deprivation for these symptoms, contact your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms and are not having troubles with sleep.

 

79) Do you experience eye itching, burning or tired eyes, difficulty seeing, blurred vision, or diplopia?

80) Do you find yourself recognizing illusions but have no doubts about their being illusions (e.g. Looks like fog around the light)?

81) Do you find yourself recognizing illusions but having some doubts about their reality?

82) Do you recognize illusions but, for a time at least, believe they are real?

1) No

96) Do you see changes in or loss of shape, size, movement, color or texture consistancies? Do you have disturbed depth perception?

An answer of yes to question number 79 is not at all unusual for someone who has slept badly for a coule of nights.

Answers of yes to questions number 80 and 81shows there is some indication that you are probably sleep deprived and starting to suffer functional impairment (for instance, you shouldn't be driving in this condition).

Answers of yes to questions 82 and 96 show significant sleep deprivation and impairment.
